Melbourne Cup 2012

Today is the day when a horse race stops this nation, The MELBOURNE CUP. On the strike of 3pm in Melbourne a bunch of horses at Flemington start racing anti-clockwise around and everyone watches it in Australia. Australia comes to a stop. Except school teachers, Diane tells me, have to watch a replay after school.

Or friend Colin has been excited for weeks studying the form and picking a winner. Once again, Diane and I had a quiet lunch for two on the balcony before the race.

For our overseas readers, here are some pics of the event, taken off the telly:
Our Melbourne Cup Luncjh, cheers.....

Here we go.

A couple of Royals came out to watch the race.

There in the starting gates.
Let's go...

...and they're off.

A real shot of the field

Coming up to the first bend

the field approaches

The winner GREEN MOON passes the gate

The proud winner

The winner gives a TV interview.
No doubt, we'll do it all again, this time next year.

  2. I have belated news for you Denise in Virginia, USA!
My selections: And I might add after so carefully analysing the form.
Kellini - 4th. Ran his guts out.
    Americain - the favourite - 11th
    Dunedan - the second favourite - 14th
Ethiopia - last and 63 lengths last - I think he broke down??? Anyhow this horse's jockey copped
a suspension for causing severe interference. I think that the horse was to blame, the legs gave
out - a sorry way to end a career for a horse. No story yet on the horse - Ethiopia, but I suspect he
    may be "put down".
Well back to the drawing boards for 2013. One lives in hope.
This year the first 4 over the line/winning post for an outlay of $24.00 paid $969,406.60!
I am in complete mortification. Your sympathy would be appreciated - in anticipation!
    In total distress.
    Colin

  3. Oops - "it will never race again" refers to the horse, I finished any ideas of racing as an Olympican
many years ago. Too distraught in what may have been!
