Freemantle

This morning we visit the harbour town of Freemantle with its fabulous colonial buildings. Freemantle was the port from where Australia II liberated the 'America's Cup' in 1983 from the New York Yacht Club  where legend had it, it was permanently bolted down.

  1. Great photo Bill of the waterfront.
Unfortunately the cup was not bolted down as well as expected. A certain Dennis Connors came with bolt cutters and took it back to San Diego in 1987! And to make sure it ( the cup) got back to the States in one piece, the San Diego Yacht Club and various US sponsors chartered a Continental Airlines DC10 to take it back!!!!
Ah yes, they were heady days in the 1980's!

ps: Just a thought - you and Diane could charter a smaller plane to transport back all the Margaret River wines you purchased?????

According to the history section in todays paper, a coincidence has occurred. It was today in 1983 that Australia shocked the New York Yacht Club by winning the America's Cup.
Quite amazing - so enjoy Fremantle!!!
